SPARTANBURG, S.C. – John Lane, Wofford College professor, director of the Goodall Environmental Studies Center and author, received the Water Conservationist Award on Feb. 21, presented by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.
Lane, professor of English and environmental studies, is one of 14 individuals and organizations honored for playing a major role in conserving South Carolina’s natural resources for future generations.
Lane collaborated with other Wofford professors to develop a learning community for Wofford first-year students, “The Nature and Culture of Water,” and has conducted workshops nationally and internationally on the integration of science and the humanities.
Recently, Lane and his colleagues in environmental studies developed “Thinking Like a River,” an initiative to encourage sustainability along local waterways. He also has authored 12 books, served as editor of four, and is considered a premier nature writer of the South. Most of his work focuses on Southern ecosystems as they relate to water.
Lane also is co-founder and board member of Upstate Forever.
The Water Conservationist Award goes to an individual or organization that has made “an outstanding contribution to the protection of water resources, water quality or a program for sound management and planning for water resources.”
