Biographical note: A native of Missouri, James Alburn Chiles studied at Central College, a Methodist-related college in Missouri, and took a master’s degree in German and French at Vanderbilt. After studying in Germany and France, he returned to the United States and taught Gernab at Washington University in St. Louis. He earned a law degree, worked as a journalist, and eventually enrolled in doctoral studies at the University of Illinois. He came to Wofford College in 1914 to teach German. The author of several textbooks in German, he served at Wofford until retirement in 1947. Perhaps his greatest achievement at Wofford was founding Delta Phi Alpha, the national German honorary fraternity. He died in Spartanburg in 1951.
