Biographical note: Francis Pendleton Gaines, Jr., the sixth president of Wofford College, was born in his grandfather’s home on the campus of Mississippi State University on x, 1918, the son of Francis Pendleton and Sadie Robert Gaines. Gaines grew up in a college president’s home, as his father was president of Wake Forest University from 1927 to 1930, and president of Washington and Lee University from 1930 to 1959. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1940 and took his doctorate in history at the University of Virginia. He worked at Southern Methodist University before coming to Wofford in 1952 as president of the college.
