Historical note: Wofford College’s first libraries were the property of the College’s Literary Societies. Gradually, through donations by the early faculty and the merger of the literary society libraries, the College developed a single library. Originally housed in one room, then two, in the Main Building, the collection soon overflowed its limited space. A series of short-term librarians administered the library until 1905. In that year, Mary Sydnor DuPre began her 48-year tenure as librarian. The library moved into its own freestanding building in 1910. Named the Whitefoord Smith Library in honor of the College’s first English professor, the building was financed partly with a gift from Miss Julia Smith, Professor Smith’s daughter. Miss DuPre retired in 1953 and was succeeded by Herbert Hucks, Jr. The library was expanded in 1948, but the College’s growth in the 1950s and 1960s made the library inadequate and outdated. Students began to campaign for a new library in 1965, and the College broke ground for the new library in November 1967. Frank Anderson succeeded Hucks as librarian in 1966 and oversaw the construction of the new building. The library opened in August 1969, and was dedicated in honor of Sandor Teszler in 1971. Anderson retired and was succeeded in 1984 by Oakley H. Coburn, who oversaw growth in the library’s staff and services, including the implementation of an automated library system in the late 1980s and the transformation of library services brought about by the availability of internet databases in the late 1990s.

Organized into 4 series; pre-1947 files, official files, exhibits, and photographs. The early files series represents the tenure of librarian Mary Sydnor DuPre (1905-1953), and the official files series represents the tenure of Herbert Hucks, Jr. (Associate Librarian, 1947-53, Librarian 1953-66, Frank J. Anderson (1966-84) and Oakley H. Coburn (1984-). The official grouping also correlates to the planning and construction of the Sandor Teszler Library.

Summary: The records consist of the files maintained by the librarians and archivists of the College. The first series, created by Mary Sydnor DuPre and David Duncan Wallace, acting as chairman of the faculty library committee, consist mainly of order correspondence with various presses and booksellers. Samples of correspondence have been retained.

The second series, official files, consists of correspondence, acquisitions lists, student assistant schedules and manuals, gift correspondence, facility records, and the annual reports and budget requests of the librarian. It covers the planning, construction, and move into the Sandor Teszler Library, and the opening and dedication of that building. It consists also of the schedules, memoranda, and staff manuals of the library.

The third series, exhibits, consists of the materials maintained by the librarian relating to exhibitions.

The fourth series, photographs, consists of pictures and slides of the various libraries, including construction scenes of the Sandor Teszler Library. This series also contains a t-shirt with a bar code on it representing the library’s automation project.

Accession has been continuous. Mary Sydnor DuPre maintained the pre-1947 records. Herbert Hucks, Jr., maintained the 1947-66 records. The post-1966 records also were maintained by Herbert Hucks, Jr., but in his position as College Archivist. A revision of the files was performed in 1999, and then new additions from Frank J. Anderson were made in December 2008 and the arrangement revised by archivist Phillip Stone.
