History note: During the late 1990s, the question of what would happen to the college’s computer infrastructure on January 1, 2000 became a pressing concern. At Wofford, a task force led by Dr. B. G. Stephens ‘57, the college’s vice president for technology, worked to address these concerns. With several hundred desktop computers, computer servers, many different software packages, and numerous outside vendors and agencies that the college communicated with electronically, the Y2K transition had the potential to be expensive and time-consuming. Many college trustees, themselves the leaders of corporations, were well aware of the problem, and the board took an active interest in the college’s preparations. Preparations grew more intense in the fall of 1999, as the college applied software patches to computers and replaced hardware that could not be updated.
