On Wednesday, April 23 Wofford head football coach Mike Ayers and Tommy McKelvey, one of the top shooters on the Wofford rifle team, squared off in a special shooting exhibition inside Benjamin Johnson Arena.
McKelvey, a sophomore from Union, SC, and Ayers aimed their air rifles at targets set at a distance of 33 feet and shot two rounds (10 shots per round) each.
In the final tally, McKelvey, a native of Union, S.C., shot a 192, with Ayers scoring a 99. A perfect score for the event was 200 with the pair shooting 10 targets per round. Ayers was much better in Round 2 as he tried to mount a comeback stringing together several 7 and 8 points shots back-to-back. Predictably, the sharpshooter McKelvey matched each advance with a perfect 10.
McKelvey holds the Wofford school record in rifle, shooting a 586 at Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) Meet 3 as freshman in November 2012. She led the Terriers at the SEARC Championships last month shooting a 577 to help the Terriers place 4th in the meet.
