Through generous external funding, iCAN (College Access Network) Spartanburg, trains and engages Wofford students as “near-peer college access mentors” to be matched one-on-one with Spartanburg County high school students in a mutually beneficial relationship. All high school students are enrolled in the Citizen Scholars Program, Wofford’s partner in the venture. Mentors regularly communicate with their mentee to build life-long bonds and provide advice regarding the college admissions process and various aspects of college life.
The program officially began in February 2018 and welcomed its inaugural group totaling 21 high school juniors and sophomores in February 2018. Currently the program encompasses 32 high school students and 41 Wofford College students.
Thank you for your interest in becoming a near-peer mentor with iCAN Spartanburg. We are currently not accepting applications for new mentors. Please check back soon!
During the academic calendar year, mentors personally interact with mentees monthly at Seminar Saturdays. Various topics are explored during Seminar Saturday that are directly correlated to the college-going process. Seminar Saturday serves as a great opportunity for mentors and mentees to reconnect but also for mentors to provide detailed guidance in all things related to college entry including college applications, scholarship searches and aspects related to college student success.
The inaugural iCAN Spartanburg Summer Institute will be held at Wofford College June 9-11, 2019. This residential experience will feature specific workshops on college-readiness skills and other aspects of college life. Additionally, mentees will have be exposed to a mock psychology lecture and lab course.
