Wofford Priorities

In 2029, Wofford will celebrate its 175th anniversary. As we approach this milestone, our community is being asked to think about the college’s future. How can we ensure that Wofford is a model of excellence for its next 175 years?

Institutional change is driven by aspirational thinking. As we look forward to the future, we can list some examples of how the trustees, the administration and the faculty have reimagined Wofford since 1980:

  • Co-education and the growth of the student body.
  • The 1987 Masterplan and the construction of the Olin Building.
  • The enlargement of our international studies program.
  • The move to NCAA Division I athletics and the expansion of our athletic teams including, but not limited to, adding women’s lacrosse and women’s softball.
  • The creation of the Michael S. Brown Village Center and senior village apartments.
  • The development of the Goodall Environmental Studies Center and a satellite campus in the Glendale community.
  • The creation of an environmental studies program and the construction of the Chander Center for Environmental Studies.
  • The construction of the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts and the incorporation of thriving arts programming in theatre, art history, studio art and music.
  • The redesign of the Sandor Teszler Library and the development of an academic commons.
  • The constructing of the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Any plan to imagine the Wofford of the future needs to be consistent with the college’s mission statement, which appears below:

Wofford’s mission is to provide a superior liberal arts education that prepares its students for extraordinary and positive contributions to a global society. The focus of Wofford’s mission is upon fostering commitment to excellence in character, performance, leadership, service to others and lifelong learning. Wofford strives for sustainability in all aspects of college life through respect for the environment and through our core values.

Gaining feedback and inspiration from the entire Wofford community is vital to thinking broadly and strategically about the future.
