The Herbert Hucks, Jr. Awards
Presented by the South Carolina Conference
Commission on Archives and History

The S.C. Conference Commission on Archives and History presents the Herbert Hucks, Jr., Award for Historic Preservation and Interpretation each year at Annual Conference.  The awards are presented to individuals, authors, and local churches, and are named in memory of Dr. Herbert Hucks, Jr., who served as archivist of Wofford College and of the SC Annual Conference for over thirty years. 

Application for the award 

The S.C. Conference Commission on Archives and History is pleased to receive applications for the 2019 Herbert Hucks, Jr., Award for Historic Preservation and Interpretation. This award will be presented to all qualified churches and one individual and one publication at the 2019 Annual Conference Session. 

TO APPLY FOR THE CHURCH AWARD:

As many churches as have fulfilled the qualifications during the past year will be recognized. Churches may qualify any number of times in a period of years. The purpose of this award is to encourage ongoing efforts to maintain awareness of the heritage celebrated in all churches of the Conference and to create research materials for the future.

Please include a cover sheet with the name of the church, the name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address (if applicable) of the person  making the nomination as well as the name and contact information for the pastor of the church.  

Please respond to each of the questions

1. Describe how the church historian has been active in the local church: projects, publications, collection and preservation of objects/data.
2. What steps have been taken to organize and preserve records or artifacts or what additions have been made to the church’s archives in the last year? What is the overall quality of the current collection?
3. In what ways has Methodist heritage, conference or local church history been interpreted for people in the local church in the past year as part of the Sunday School or confirmation class curriculum; UME, UMM OR UMYF program; worship experience; or general interest display?
4. Has Heritage Sunday been celebrated in some form in the past year?
5. Has a record been made on paper or video/audio tape in the past year of recollections of members who witnessed aspects of the church’s story?
6. Have copies of published documents been sent to the Archives at Wofford College and/or Claflin University? (May be included with this application.)
7. Please include appropriate documentation for responses to questions above.

TO NOMINATE AN INDIVIDUAL

Individual Qualifications: Nominees for this singular recognition should be someone who during his or her life, or in some special way recently, has contributed significantly to the preservation or interpretation of United Methodist history/heritage beyond the local church. Please describe in a few paragraphs the contributions made by this person. One individual recognition may be awarded annually; re-nominations are welcome any time.  By "beyond the local church," we anticipate that the individual would have gone beyond the work of the local church.

TO NOMINATE A PUBLICATION

Publication Qualifications: To be eligible, a book or publication must contribute to the knowledge, preservation, or understanding of United Methodist history/ heritage beyond the local church. The Commission will consider the quality of the publication’s writing, research and its contribution to the history of South Carolina Methodism. As with the individual award, one book or publication may be recognized annually. Nominators are asked to assess the publication's qualities in a few paragraphs. A publication is eligible for consideration during the year it was published and in the subsequent year - in this case, 2017 or 2018.

The following individuals have received Herbert Hucks Awards since the award was created.  

The individual award recognizes an individual who, during his or her life, or in some special way recently, has contributed significantly to the preservation or interpretation of United Methodist history/heritage beyond the local church.

The first award in the category of publications was presented in 2009. It was awarded to Dr. Katherine Davis Cann for her book "Common Ties: a History of Textile Industrial Institute, Spartanburg Junior College, and Spartanburg Methodist College."  In 2011, James A. Neal won the award for his book "Historic United Methodist Churches and Places in South Carolina."  In 2012, the award was presented to Dr. Roger M. Gramling for his book "John Wesley and the Beginnings of Methodism."  In 2013, the award was presented to Dr. Michael Wolfe and the South Carolina United Methodist Advocate for Dr. Wolfe's book "In the World, Not of the World: 175 Years of the South Carolina United Methodist Advocate.  

The following local churches have received the award for their work in preserving and interpreting their church history. As many churches as qualify each year receive the award.
