History note: The Conference Historical Society was organized in 1856 to preserve the historical records of Methodism in South Carolina. It promoted Methodist history by presenting an annual address, maintaining the Annual Conference’s records, and acquiring other materials. Later it was reconstituted as a membership organization that promotes Methodist history, but does not have administrative responsibility for maintaining the archives.
