SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College will hold a topping out celebration at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, for the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, ceremonially marking the installation of the highest beam of the building and acknowledging the work of construction crews on the project. The building is slated to open in the fall of 2017.

After a 15-minute program, members of the Robins & Morton construction crews, along with Wofford students, faculty and staff, will be able to sign a ceremonial steel beam that has been signed by Jerry Richardson, owner/founder of the Carolina Panthers, a 1959 Wofford College graduate and a member of Wofford’s board of trustees, who provided the funding for the building.

The 123,000-square-foot Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium will include a 3,400-seat basketball arena and a 500-seat volleyball competition venue. The facility will replace Benjamin Johnson Arena, which will continue to be used as a first-rate facility for intramural and campus recreation activities.

The Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium will serve as the home for women’s basketball, men’s basketball and volleyball. The facility will have a seating capacity for non-athletics functions, such as commencement and concerts, of 4,500.

The new facility, located on Cumming Street beside Gibbs Stadium, where the Terriers play home football games, also will feature home and visitor locker rooms for various sports, a state-of-the-art training room with hydrotherapy, coaches’ offices, team meeting rooms, a state-of-the-art broadcast media center and fan experience zones.

Attendees should park in the paved parking lot across Cumming Street from the construction site. Enter the event site at the construction tent on the right near Gibbs Stadium; they will be directed to the event venue.
