SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Wofford College’s study abroad program was again recognized as one of the best in the nation by the Institute of International Education (IIE), and the institute’s 2024 Open Doors report showed growth in all areas.
According to the report, which was released on Monday, Nov. 18, Wofford ranks as the No. 6 baccalaureate college for the participation in study abroad for academic credit. The college moved up two spots from the 2023 report. Wofford also rose three spots to No. 3 for short-term study abroad participation among baccalaureate colleges. The report collected data from the 2022-23 academic year.
On top of Wofford’s total number of students participating in study abroad experiences, the college ranked No. 5 in credit awarded for study abroad experiences, marking the first time the college has made the top five in this category.
“We are thrilled to continue to grow our participation in study abroad, particularly as we are working hard to make it accessible to all students,” says Amy Lancaster, dean of international programs. “We believe that these experiences are more necessary now than ever. Those who study abroad engage with different cultures in ways that prepare them to think critically about their own values, beliefs and identities.”
Study abroad has been a popular program at Wofford, and great interest was shown once more in 2022-23. During that time, 476 students studied abroad, including 374 students who participated in short-term study abroad opportunities. Wofford also hopes to expand its study abroad opportunities in the future.
Wofford’s program has given students opportunities for community and global engagement, which is one of the college’s core values. Lancaster says students “examine the world around them through a different lens” by studying abroad, which can play an important and potentially transformational role in a student’s undergraduate education.
The results were announced to kick off International Education Week, held this year from Nov. 18-22.
