SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Claire McCaskill, former Democratic U.S. senator from Missouri and current MSNBC/NBC political analyst, will speak on the Wofford College campus Monday, Oct. 21. She will address the topic “The Future of American Democracy” at 6 p.m. in Main Building’s Leonard Auditorium. McCaskill will take questions at the end of the event. 

The event is free, and the public is invited to attend. There is no ticketing or pre-registration process. Seating is general admission. In her talk, McCaskill will examine what’s broken in American politics and discuss essential steps for finding fixes. McCaskill, known for working across the aisle, was the top-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee and a senior member of the Armed Services Committee when she left the Senate in 2018. She was the state auditor of Missouri from 1999-2007. 

McCaskill’s talk is part of the “Defining or Dividing?: Contemporary Issues in American Culture” Series, which will conclude the fall semester with

About Claire McCaskill

Claire McCaskill has spent her career as a prosecutor and elected official. She earned a reputation in the U.S. Senate as plain-spoken and independent. 

Born and raised in the “show me” state, she attended college and law school at the University of Missouri before beginning a career as an assistant prosecutor in Kansas City, specializing in prosecuting arsons and sex crimes. She was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives and made history when she became the first woman elected Jackson County prosecutor. There she launched one of the national first drug courts and established a first-of-its-kind domestic violence unit. She became the Missouri state auditor. 

In 2006, McCaskill became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Missouri, winning the seat once held by Harry Truman. She won reelection in 2012 and served until 2018. She is now a political analyst and speaker.
