Mary Lila Blackburn ’23

B.S. finance

Since January, Blackburn has served as a tax preparation assistant at Waters & Matthis, a public accounting firm headquartered in Wallace, N.C. At Wofford, she was in the student-managed James- Atkins Investment Fund and was a tax volunteer. “Being able to have a close relationship with professors and talk things over with them allowed me insight into the industries I was interested in,” Blackburn says. “This helped me know more about the industry I was going into.”

Emily Hathcock ’23

B.S. In biology

Hathcock began pursuing her master of public health degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall of 2023. In January, she began serving as a state officer coach for HOSA, a student- led organization that empowers future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community. “This has allowed me in my state officer role to support students and help them navigate their roles as leaders and students,” Hathcock says.

Hayes Lanford ’15

B.S. in mathematics

Lanford graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and has been placed in an anesthesiology residency at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Before moving to Maryland, he will complete a one-year transitional role with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. “Wofford prepared me to perform at a high level,” he says. “I owe a great deal of credit to exceptional faculty in the mathematics and economics departments who sharpened my analytical and problem-solving skills.”

Nneka Mogbo ’20

B.S. in Intercultural studies

Mogbo spent a year studying abroad in Africa and the Middle East. She has now founded and assumed the role of executive director at Úrú Collective, a talent- seeking company. Mogbo says study abroad opportunities shaped her career path. “It’s one thing to hear about those places in class, but studying abroad really helped,” she says. “I credit Wofford, my study abroad experiences and the variety of languages the college offers for what I do now.”

Parks Schoen ’18

B.A. in art history

Schoen transitioned from pursuing art to working as a financial advisor for Schoen Capital Group in September 2023. While his current role diverges from his undergraduate focus, Schoen attributes his success to his Wofford experience. “With Wofford being a liberal arts school, I feel like I got such a well-rounded education and learned how to build relationships and connections,” he says. “In wealth management, my job is based on relationships and how to foster those well.”

Curneisha Williams ’20

B.A. in business economics

In the fall of 2023, Williams began pursuing her master of education degree at Harvard University. Now, she chairs the advocacy committee for the Harvard Graduate Council. Reflecting on her experiences, Williams emphasizes the leadership skills she acquired at Wofford. “Wofford taught me how to lead,” she says. “It’s really not about credit or spotlights or anything; it’s about the impact you make and the legacy you leave, whether people know it was you or not.”
