Biographical note: Born in 1897 in Laurens, SC, Charles F. Nesbitt graduated from Wofford in 1922 and went on to earn his seminary degree at Emory and a master’s doctorate in religion at the University of Chicago. A clergy member of the South Carolina Annual Conference, Dr. Nesbitt joined the religion department at Wofford in 1939, the year he completed his doctorate. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he was a charter member of the Southern section of the Society of Biblical Literature. At Wofford, he taught a generation of students who went on to become Methodist ministers. Retiring in 1966, Dr. Nesbitt died in Spartanburg on December 22, 1976.
