Abercrombie - Caldwell

	Dr. Clarence Lewis Abercrombie, III Professor of Biological and Social Sciences. Dr. Abercrombie came to Wofford in 1972 with a PhD from Yale University. Over his forty year career, he taught in several different departments. He was frequently invited to teach at United Methodist-related Africa University.
	Dr. Fred Thomas Adams Professor of Sociology Dr. Adams was received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Alabama and his Ph.D. from Tulane University. He was appointed to the faculty in 1958 and retired in 1984. He was the author of an internationally used textbook, The Way of Modern Man (1968). During his tenure he served as chair of the Sociology department and as the advisor to Wofford College’s chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, the national social science honor society. Professor Adams died in 2006.
	Dr. George Cotton Smith Adams Professor of Foreign Languages Dr. Adams received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. He was appointed to the faculty in 1952 and retired in 1976. From 1960 until his retirement, Dr. Adams served as the chair of the Department of Foreign Languages. He was appointed president of the of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1958 and was elected to honorary membership in Wofford's Phi Beta Kappa chapter in 1972. Professor Adams died in 1981.
	Dr. Constance Dean Armitage Antonsen Associate Professor of Fine Arts Dr. Antonsen received her A.B. from the University of California at Berkeley, her M.A. from the University of Georgia, and her Ph.D. from the University of South Africa. She was appointed to the faculty in 1962. During her tenure at Wofford, Professor Antonsen was active in the Republican National Committee. Dr. Antonsen’s services included the positions of Chairwoman of President Reagan’s Conference on Aging, Co-Chairman of the S.C. Reagan/Bush ’84 Committee and as a member of the RNC Rules Committee in 1976. Dr. Antonsen was also founder and coach of Wofford’s fencing team.
	Prof. Hugh T. Arthur Professor of Economics Professor Arthur received his B.S. from Davis-Elkins College, a Master’s from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in economics from the University of South Carolina. Before coming to Wofford he served in the U.S. Air Force, where he obtained the rank of colonel. He joined the faculty in 1963 and retired after 17 years of service to the college in 1980. Professor Arthur died in 1984
	Dr. Charles David Barrett Professor of Religion Dr. Barrett received his A.B. from Wofford College (class of 1955), a B.D. from Emory University and a Ph.D. from Drew University. As a student Dr. Barrett wrote the “Charlie Says” column for the Old Gold and Black and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Barrett joined the Wofford faculty in 1966 and retired in 1998. During his tenure at Wofford, Dr. Barrett served as Assistant Faculty marshal and was appointed to be the first Peter B. Hendrix Professor of Religion.
	Dr. Ross Hawthorne Bayard Professor of History Dr. Bayard received his B.A from Washington and Lee University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Bayard joined the faculty in 1961 and retired in 2000. During his tenure at Wofford, Dr. Bayard served as the faculty advisor to the Student Senate and led various interims to Russia and China. Dr. Bayard was also recognized by the Association of Colleges and Universities for International-Intercultural Studies (ACCUIIS) in 1975 for his contributions to the furtherance of the objectives and programs of ACUIIS.
	Dr. Curtis Porter Bell Professor of Mathematics Dr. Bell received a B.S. from Wofford College (class of 1955), and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. Dr. Bell joined the faculty in 1963 and retired in 1999. Dr. Bell was inducted into Wofford’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter as a student and served as its president and secretary as a faculty member.
	Dr. Victor Bilanchone, Jr. Professor of Music Dr. Bilanchone received his B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. from the University of Miami. Professor Bilanchone joined the faculty in 1972 and retired in 2001. He directed the college's musical ensembles, leading the Glee Club and Wofford Singers in regular campus and community performances.
	Prof. William Raymond Bourne Professor of Modern Languages He received his A.B. from Wofford College (class of 1923) and his A.M. from the University of North Carolina. Professor Bourne joined the faculty in 1925 and retired in 1966. Professor Bourne was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was Wofford’s first Dean of Students from 1946 to 1948; He was also the John M. Reeves Professor of Modern Languages. Professor Bourne died in 1975.
	Dr. John Moore Bullard Albert C. Outler Professor of Religion Dr. Bullard received his A.B. and A.M. from the University of North Carolina and his M.Div. and Ph.D. from Yale University. Professor Bullard joined the faculty in 1961 and served the college until his retirement in 2001. During his tenure Dr. Bullard served as the faculty secretary and as chair of the religion department and was named the Albert C. Outler Professor of Religion. An accomplished organist, Dr. Bullard was dean of the Spartanburg chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
	Vernon Caldwell Professor of Physical Education and Assistant in Intercollegiate Athletics Professor Caldwell received a B.S. from Carson-Newman College and an M.S. from the University of Tennessee. He joined the faculty in 1959 and during his tenure he was named as Wofford’s head trainer. Professor Caldwell also served as trainer for the Shrine Bowl and the South Carolina All-Star football teams. Professor Caldwell died in 1963.
