Wofford students can choose to be members of the Society of Physics Students (SPS), which is a professional association designed for students who are interested in physics. Besides physics majors, members include majors in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics and medicine. Each semester, the SPS holds events such as guest speaker lectures, social events, pizza parties, Pop-Tarts day, astronomy observing sessions and outreach to local school districts.
The Wofford College Physics Department is proud to be included in the ranks of higher education institutions that hold a Sigma Pi Sigma charter, which is restricted to colleges and universities that offer a strong physics major. Sigma Pi Sigma is the national physics honor society, which elects members on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. Sigma Pi Sigma exists to honor outstanding scholarship in physics; to encourage interest in physics among students at all levels; to promote an attitude of service of its members toward their fellow students, colleagues and the public; and to provide a fellowship of persons who have excelled in physics.
