General Education

The general education requirements at Wofford College starting Fall 2024 are organized around the areas of:

  • Introduction to Liberal Arts
  • Inquiry Across Disciplines
  • Civic Consciousness

The Introduction to the Liberal Arts provides foundational experiences that help students develop self, an openness to new ideas and people, and skills for critical reasoning, academic reading and research, and effective communication. The courses should be taken in the first year and encompass:

  • LIBA 101
  • FYI 101
  • Language other than English (101 and 102 or 200-level in the areas Arabic, Chinese, French, German, or Spanish)
  • ENGL 102
  • PHED 100-level

The Inquiry Across Disciplines requirement gives students the opportunity to develop an understanding of multiple branches of learning and ways of thinking. Typically, the requirement is 3-4 credit hours in each area. The disciplinary areas are outlined below. The courses that apply to each of the inquiry requirements are identified on the class schedule with the attribute noted.

  • History (HI)
  • Fine Arts (FA)
  • Literary Studies (LI)
  • Mathematics (MA)
  • Philosophy (PH)
  • Religious Studies (RS)
  • Social Sciences (SS)
  • Science Lab (SL)

Civic Consciousness courses focus on building citizenship skills, by cultivating an understanding of diverse perspectives and developing ways of engaging across disciplines. Those areas include:

  • Diverse Perspectives and Experiences (DP)
  • Global Perspectives and Experiences (GP)
  • Science in Context (SC)

**Courses with a Civic Consciousness attribute which also have an Inquiry Across Disciplines attribute can be used to fulfill BOTH requirements.
