Social media can be a valuable tool to reach your desired audience and create engagement. There are a variety of ways available to you that will help you reach your target audience. Social media is only one option, and may not be the best fit, depending upon your goals, audience, time available to commit to managing an account or accounts, and more. Answering the following questions will help determine if a new social media account is a good fit for your goals and objectives:
Effective social media accounts require planning, management and oversight. Before starting a new social media account, ask yourself:
- Do you have time and staffing within your office to plan, produce and post content on a regular basis? Can you commit to daily monitoring accounts and comments, including nights and weekends? (Note: student workers cannot manage college accounts without faculty/staff oversight.)
- Are there currently active accounts in place who reach your desired audience? Would it be better for you to partner with an existing account, rather than creating internal competition for the same audience?
- Is your audience completely internal? Is your goal for this account engagement with this audience and providing information for them? If YES, consider a closed (private) group or a messaging platform, rather than a new social media account.
