Off-Campus Study Billing FAQs

Beginning with students studying abroad in the fall of 2025, there will be no location-specific difference in fees. Students will no longer pay a separate administrative fee to Wofford College, and financial aid — including need and merit-based aid — will continue to apply toward semester study abroad.

This policy applies only to semester and year-long programs. For additional information, please see the FAQs.

Wofford College is committed to making study abroad a more integral and viable educational opportunity for all students. This means, for study abroad to be equally accessible to all students, the college must be able to provide institutional financial aid to support students with merit-based aid and/or demonstrated need. The college relies mainly on tuition revenue to make institutional aid portable, since institutional merit and need-based financial aid come from this revenue. In addition, academic credits and grades earned on semester study abroad are treated as Wofford College credits as opposed to transfer credit, as is often the case at other colleges. The courses, credits and grades are reviewed, approved, and then posted on the academic transcript. Course grades are calculated into the student’s cumulative grade point average. In sum, Wofford will charge Wofford fees for awarding Wofford academic credit.

Yes. Financial aid will continue to be applied toward off-campus study costs for approved academic year and semester programs.

Yes. The updated billing structure does not change the way these scholarships will apply. State and federal aid, as well as external scholarships and private loans, will continue to apply toward semester and academic-year programs.

Students on non-Wofford programs may qualify for additional funding from Wofford’s partners and other external agencies. Please click here for additional information. Students should be aware that external financial aid or scholarships could affect the amount of Wofford aid that they are eligible to receive.

Students will be issued a $3,000 allowance to assist in paying out-of-pocket expenses. These expenses may include, but are not limited to, roundtrip airfare, passport and/or visa fees, required immunizations (if applicable), meals (in most cases), textbooks, supplemental course fees, independent travel and daily living expenses.

Students who study off-campus for a full semester could receive two invoices for the study abroad/away semester, term or year depending on their housing and activity choices. See summary of the billing model:
